Funerals at Cannon Memorial Chapel
When Memorial Services and Funerals for members of the University of Richmond community are held in Cannon Chapel they are planned through the University Services Department, Columbarium and Memorial Garden Office and the Office of the Chaplaincy. When you are aware of the need for a service at Cannon Memorial Chapel, please contact Carla Shriner, University Services (804-289-8160) and/or the Office of the Chaplaincy, (804-289-8500) right away.
As appropriate, the above mentioned offices will:
- help you pick a date which is convenient both for the family and the University community
- work with you to plan the service
- help you be in touch with the appropriate offices if you want to have a reception on campus (special events, police, catering, etc)
- work with your family's minister if one is available.
- arrange for the University of Richmond flag to be flown at half-mast for 72 hours around the time of the service (this is also done when a service is held off campus)
If the family has a minister they would like to use for the service, they are welcome to invite that person. The University Chaplain is also available to do the service. If the service is to be a University Memorial Service, the Chaplain will be present, but is NOT required to preside.
Some University of Richmond families would prefer that their loved one be cremated. The University of Richmond Columbarium and Memorial Garden is available to those who would like to arrange to have the cremated remains inurned or scattered.
