Each year, the Office of the Chaplaincy, in partnership with the Department of Music, holds the Candlelight Services of Lessons and Carols in Cannon Memorial Chapel.  The university's Schola Cantorum and Women's Chorale present new and familiar Christmas carols and anthems in the tradition of the annual Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols that was first held in King's College Chapel in Cambridge, England, on Christmas Eve 1918. The Rev. Craig Kocher, University chaplain, presides over the services, which conclude with the lighting of candles and the singing of Silent Night.

Holiday Service of Hope
Wednesday, December 11, 2013, 5 p.m.
Cannon Memorial Chapel

The holiday season is a time of joy and good cheer, but it can also be a reminder of loved ones lost, challenging relationships, and difficult times that have been experienced throughout the year.  The Office of the Chaplaincy hosts the annual Holiday Service of Hope for those seeking support and encouragement during the holiday season. The service includes prayer, song, and candle lighting as well as a brief reflection by a Chaplaincy staff member.

Iftar
Each year, the Office of the Chaplaincy and the Muslim Students' Association host a Ramadan Iftar.  All are invited to attend this traditional breaking of the fast as part of Ramadan.  Fasting, one of the five pillars of Islam, is the focal point of the holiday requiring Muslims not only to abstain from food from sunrise to sunset, but also to abstain from negative behaviors and thoughts.  It is a time of purification, study, and reflection.  The annual Iftar offers a special opportunity for education and fellowship as we dine together and learn about the Islamic faith.
