    Tom Mullen became part of the Chaplaincy staff in 2013. He has been part of Catholic ministry at Richmond since 2004 through nearby St. Bridget parish as campus minister and in his diocesan assignment as a permanent deacon.

    Deacon Mullen works with students, staff, faculty, and community members to ensure vibrant Catholic life at Richmond through liturgy, service, devotions, education, and social outreach. He is committed to ecumenical and multifaith efforts with other campus religious traditions.

    In addition to his position in the Chaplaincy, Deacon Mullen is the Director of Public Affairs Journalism and Senior Teaching Faculty at the University. He has received the University's Distinguished Educator Award and Advisor of the Year Award, in addition to other University recognition.

    Deacon Mullen is a native of New York City who worked in professional journalism at multiple news outlets in Tennessee and Virginia for more than 20 years before moving to teaching full-time. He holds a bachelor's degree in journalism and political science from East Tennessee State University, a master's in media management from Virginia Commonwealth University and did his theological training through St. Meinrad Archabbey School of Theology. He and his wife Betsy, who also teaches journalism at the University, are often at one campus event or another cheering on and supporting their students.
