Debbie Barkley Spirit Award
The Debbie Barkley Spirit Award acknowledges senior students who have shown exceptional faithfulness in the midst of adversity and a willingness to serve others. This award honors the life and example of Debbie Barkley, a Westhampton College alumna who served as past president of the Chapel Guild. Debbie, who died of cancer in December 2009, was a light to others through her faith, courage, and service. Her husband, Bob, established this award to carry on her memory and to recognize the strength of the human spirit in students at the University of Richmond.
Nomination Process
The Chaplaincy office coordinates the nomination process each spring semester; faculty, staff and students are invited to submit a nomination form. The Debbie Barkley Spirit Award recipients and the individual who recommended them are featured in an edition of the Chaplaincy newsletter. Recipients also receive a plaque and a donation is made in their name to the human service organization of their choice. Each recipient’s name is inscribed on the Debbie Barkley Spirit Award perpetual plaque displayed in the Chaplaincy office.
