Debbie Barkley Spirit Award
The Debbie Barkley Spirit Award acknowledges students that have shown exceptional faithfulness in the midst of adversity and a willingness to serve others. This award honors the life and example of Debbie Barkley, a Westhampton College alumna and past president of our Chapel Guild. Debbie died of cancer in December 2009. Debbie was a light to others through her faith, courage, and service. Her husband, Bob, established this award to carry on her memory and to recognize the strength of the human spirit in students at the University of Richmond.
Nomination Process
The Chaplaincy office coordinates the nomination process each spring, and faculty, staff and students are invited to submit a nomination form. The Debbie Barkley Spirit Award winners and the individual who recommended them are recognized at the Chaplaincy End of Year luncheon and featured in an edition of the Chaplaincy newsletter. Award recipients also receive a plaque, and a donation is made in their name to the human service organization of their choice. Winners' names are also inscribed on the Debbie Barkley Spirit Award plaque displayed in the Chaplaincy.
