Chaplaincy Expands Retreat Offerings
The University of Richmond's Office of the Chaplaincy expanded its retreat offerings for the 2024 fall semester, providing students with enhanced opportunities for spiritual growth and community building. This initiative aligns with the Chaplaincy’s continued effort to nurture the spiritual lives of students while fostering a profound sense of belonging and connection within the larger university community.
Muslim Life hosted its second annual Fall Break retreat in Hot Springs, Virginia. The retreat theme for this year was Social Responsibility: What does Khalīfah mean to you?, exploring the responsibilities and characters of leadership through the lens of faith. Co-led by Muslim Chaplain Waleed Ilyas and Muslim Life Program Coordinator Mahreen Azam, the retreat offered students an opportunity to connect with faith and community through immersing in nature, engaging in activities such as hiking, horseback riding, and moments of reflection.
Christian Life hosted its second annual fall retreat led by University Chaplain Craig Kocher, Catholic Chaplain Tom Mullen, and Associate Chaplain Bryn Taylor. The day-long retreat encouraged participants to slow down and engage in spiritual practices that sustain their faith amidst the demands of academic life. Students began the day by enjoying introspective time on campus through prayer, journaling, walking the University of Richmond Labyrinth, and appreciating the natural beauty of Cannon Memorial Chapel and its surroundings. Following this reflective period, participants volunteered at the Farmer’s Market at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, embodying a spirit of service before returning to campus for a communal meal. The afternoon included a scenic group walk at Belle Isle, where students connected with one another while enjoying the peaceful ambiance along the James River.
Additionally, SBNR@UR (Spiritual but Not Religious at the University of Richmond) introduced its first silent retreat this semester, welcoming ten students to a contemplative weekend at Richmond Hill retreat center. Participants engaged in candlelit yoga classes, dedicated 24 hours to intentional silence, and participated in discussions about their hopes and aspirations for the upcoming academic year.
The expansion of retreat offerings by the University of Richmond's Office of the Chaplaincy underscores a commitment to fostering an inclusive spiritual environment, catering to diverse faith backgrounds, and enhancing the overall student experience through opportunities for reflection, community, and personal growth.
